What the Heck is Autopilot?
"You keep referring to Autopilot, I'm a Human not a Machine. What are you talking about?"
We perform many very complex tasks continually as part of our everyday life, such as Walking, Talking, Driving, Reading and almost everything we do.
When you were born you could do nothing - well OK, you could make noises and mess - yet now you walk, talk and carry on your life with barely a second thought.
Most of us spent the best part of 10 months learning to walk. We stumbled and fell and picked ourselves up and tried again, and again, and again until we finally mastered it. At the time it required all of our attention and focus, yet now we do it 'without thinking'.
So what changed?
When we learn a new skill we apply a vast amount of our attention and concentration to the task - we train ourselves to perform the task without having to pay attention to it. Once we have 'mastered' the task to our satisfaction we just 'perform' it 'Automatically', when needed.
What we did was train or program our 'unconscious' mind or Autopilot with a skill.
When we need to use that skill, we instruct our 'unconscious' mind or Autopilot to take over and do what needs to be done.
What most of us didn't realise was we were also training our 'Unconscious' mind or Autopilot to train or program itself with new skills. We were training it to anticipate what it was we wanted it to do, and To Do It Automatically.
Most of those 'skills' we learned deliberately or unconsciously are useful and beneficial. Sadly, what Autopilot thinks you want and what you actually want are frequently different, and Autopilot doesn't care what skill it uses in any situation, it simply uses whatever resources it has available to get you to the goal it thought you wanted. When it gets it wrong, it can leave us less than happy.
The good news is that Autopilot is happy to be 'updated' or 'reprogrammed' to use a new method or skill to achieve any desired result.
An example might be how you tied your shoelaces as a 4 year old, and how you tie them now.
I often find myself wondering, and it's good to wonder, just how big a smile can get as you realise how different your life becomes once Autopilot really knows what you want and makes that happen..... Automatically.....
